Intent
At Carnforth School, it is our intent to encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond. Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. We deliver a modern foreign language education which engages, inspires and challenges pupils equipping them with the skills and knowledge to communicate using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures. This enables our pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond, both in speech and in writing.
Implementation
Throughout the programme of study, opportunities are provided for children to communicate for practical purposes. As pupils progress, they will develop accurate pronunciation and intonation and be confident presenting ideas orally. Skills learnt in French are transferable across our curriculum from developing speaking and listening skills when orally rehearsing new vocabulary to strengthening memory when recapping previously learnt language. We use Kapow Primary to deliver our French lessons. Kapow is designed to instil a love of language learning through popular topics and cross-curricular themes.
We provide pupils with the language necessary to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and articulate the key knowledge they have gained. Throughout the subject of French, we will provide children with the opportunity to develop their communication, co-operation and resilience. This provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries. We want our children to aim high and understand the opportunities the future could hold for them as linguists. We want them to be inspired to become a translator, interpreter, journalist or teacher.
Bonjour je’mappelle Connor. Learning French is fun because we get to play games and sing songs in French. We do lots of speaking and listening which helps us to remember new words.
